Cruising in the Aegean, you should not miss the chance to visit this modern marina. Offering highest comfort and services for charter crews from all over the world, it is a perfect starting point to explore the "green island" by car, bike or afoot.
Location & Approach Also known to the regulars as Pythagorio after the name of the city it’s located near, the Marina Samos can be found on the homonymous Greek island from the eastern Aegean Sea.
The marina is located on the southeastern part of the island, in a protected bay, whose lines are continued to the south by a long breakwater that stretches far out to sea from west to east. The coordinates for this new marina that was established in 2006 are 26° 57' E, 37° 41' N, which puts it about 5km from the local airport, a fact which drastically reduces your trips transfer time.
The approach is pretty straightforward as the island is surrounded by open waters, except to the east where the massive Turkish mainland sometimes causes accelerated winds in the narrow channel between the two pieces of land. skippers should also note that the meltemi is active in the region during summer and can occasionally reach a gale force of 9.
As the marina is a port of entry, there are some formalities you’ll have to fulfill before entering the harbor, such as contacting the officials on VHF channel 9 and once inside wait for the attendants to guide you to your berth. Mooring is done with mooring lines so don’t drop anchor.
Infrastructure & Ambience This particular marina has 260 berths reserved for vessels. The maximum boat length handled by the Samos marina is 50m and the maximum draft is 6m. The berths are aligned along 3 piers inside the marina and along the inner breakwater and the shoreline.
The regular services provided are water and 220V electricity connections for every berth, toilets and showers, a laundry service, internet and cable connections. Once in the marina, the sailor will notice the restaurant/rotisserie which also happens to be popular with the locals, a café, a chandlery, a supermarket, a dive shop and a car rental agency.
Repairs can be also done at the Samos marina at the boatyard. Here, the skipper will find an 80t travel lift, long-term storage space as well as a wide assortment of repairs shops: fiberglass, canvas, electrical, engine and even a sailmaker.
Being less than 15 minutes from town by foot, it’s easy to get all other necessities from outside the marina, but in case that too seems a bit too far for you to walk, there is a taxi service available to carry you and whatever groceries or souvenirs you picked up to remember your trip by.
